Elitism

Elitism occurs when certain groups of people are more talented than others and consider that they themselves only are important. Such is the case in our top schools where weaker students admit that they face a lot of stress from their peers to do well in school. Or else, their peers would look down on them.

This is fast becoming a serious problem which when goes unchecked, could lead to social problems. Many people would want to get into these top schools for their elite statuses and if they do not make the cut, they would feel resentment. This leads to certain sectors of society feeling that they have been denied what they want and in the end this fuels discontent in society. So, now is the time to stop elitism before it becomes a major thorn in Singapore.

The best way to resolve problems between people with different mindsets and opinions is through communication. Organize inter - school camps or increase the number activities done between top schools and other schools that have not yet begun to shine! Instead of just sending students from one school only for camps like Outward Bound School, why not send a mixture of students from a variety of strong schools and average schools so that they can bond together and do activities together? It would help when the talented and the average students can talk and come to understand each other better. They would even learn to appreciate each other. When I went for my Outward Bound School camp, I did not like one of my group members but eventually after one week of doing activities together, I came to see him as a good friend. I am sure many other campers faced similar situations like me and know that these camps are a great help when it comes to bringing people together like the best and the alright students. Elitism would then end as no one thinks they are superior to others, but on the contrary, everyone has respect for each other.
