Racism : Impossible to handle?

Racism has for a long time existed in our world. It has spelled the start of numerous occasions of social injustices as well as wars, especially in Africa, between the different tribes. Many governments and policies have tried to stamp out racism but have only been partially successful. This is because racism results from the prejudices people have against each other and this is not easily mended by mere policies or government intervention. This is a problem with people’s mindsets, and, I feel that the best way to change their mindsets and solve racism is by making the conflicting groups of people come together and bond. Camps and retreats will do precisely this. We should send our children in our primary schools to camps where there will be racial integration. It is best to start with the younger generation as they are the future of the country and can set an example to the other generations after them not to be racist. In these camps, participants will have to complete various tasks as a team and this aids in bonding people together. Moreover, within a multi-racial group, when the participants see how each group member contributes to help the team, it would help to remove any ill- feelings against the other races as everyone works together to achieve a common goal. Over time, the prejudices against the other races will fade away and they would begin to see each other as caring group members and friends. Finally, racism would have been stopped when everyone is tightly knit. Of course, it would be best to carry out this initiative with adults in the working world but taking into account employers’ fuss of cost and production hours lost, it is not feasible in the working world so it is vital to do carry it out with the younger generation who form the country’s future. There would be costs involved but the benefits derived far outweigh the costs. Through these camps, the participants also learn to overcome their fears and be more rugged and these are important qualities in the working world too. So, the camps will help fight racism as well as churn out a more desirable workforce.
